Carding Mill Valley Flashcards
What is the title of the investigation?
Investigating the change in the velocity of the river as it travels downstream at Carding Mill Valley
What are the advantages of this location?
- Shows significant changes downstream over a short distance
- Accessible with a footpath along the river
- It is safe, the river is not too deep
What are the potential risks of the investigation?
- Falling/tripping
- Weather related risks
- Health issues (asthma)
- Drowning
- Road accident
What was the main sampling technique used?
Stratified sampling
What is stratified sampling?
It is selecting a specific location to collect data, this may be when you think it is likely that a change will occur
What is a disadvantage of using stratified sampling?
Could be biased
What is an advantage of using stratified sampling?
Specific and important data can be collected
How did we measure the velocity of the river?
Method
- Used a metre ruler to measure 5m stretch
- Put a ping pong ball at start
- Use a stopwatch to time how long it took to get to the end
- Calculate distance/time
How was the investigation of velocity kept accurate?
No one stood in the path of the ping pong ball or assisted it because this would affect results
What was the conclusion of the investigation?
The overall velocity increased downstream
