Cardiac thoracic surgery Flashcards
What is Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) and risks involved
It is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease. It diverts blood around an artery which is narrowed or blocked to improve blood supply to the heart by taking a blood vessel from somewhere else in the body and attaching it above and below the blockage
risks include things such as an irregular heart beat, wound infection and very seriously may cause a stroke.
What is valve repair and risks involved
used to treat and repair mitrial vales that have become floppy and leak.
apart from the normal risks of surgery there is also the risk of an infection spreading through the inner lining of the heart which is very serious.
What is Pneumonectomy and risks involved
Is surgery to remove a whole lung which can be used to treat cancer, COPD and TB.
there are many risks associated with this type of surgery such as DVT, bleeding, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism etc.
What is Lobectomy and risks involved
It is the surgical removal of a certain lobe from the lungs. this is conducted for a range of reasons such as cancer, tb and severe copd.
risks involved include heart complications, prolonged bleeding, dvt, embolism.
What is Segmental or wedge resection and risks involved
Surgery involves removing part of a lobe of a lung. A wedge resection is smallest and can be used to remove small tumors or for diagnostic purposes or if there is a belief that lung function will be affected too much.
risks associate include those mentioned before, heart problems, bleeding, embolism, dvt
What is Decortication and risks involved
The surgery removes a restrictive layer of fibrous tissue that lays over the lung, chest wall and diaphragm. The aim is to allow the lung to fully reexpand.
the most common complication is prolonged air leak after surgery.
What is Pleurectomy and risks involved
Pleurectomy is a type of surgery in which part of the pleura is removed. This procedure helps to prevent fluid from collecting in the affected area and is used for the treatment of mesothelioma, a pleural mesothelial cancer
What is Pleurodesis and risks involved
involves putting a substance between the pleura and the chest wall to stick it together which prevents fluid or air collection in the space again.
risks after surgery include; chest pain, shortness of breath and fever.
What is Oesophagectomy and risks involved
Surgical procedure to remove the esophagus which is usually done to remove cancer and it is then replaced with part of your intestine
risks: acid reflux, leakage, injury to other structures
