Cardiac Rehab Flashcards
What is the lactate threshold?
-what is it in people with cardiac disease?
The percentage of VO2 max at which lactate production exceeds lactate metabolism via Krebs cycle, so lactate builds up. >40% of VO2 max in normal individuals.
**people with cardiac disease have a much lower lactate threshold.
Define VO2 max
VO2 max is the maximal ability of the body to take in, transport and use oxygen
What does training do to the body in normal individuals
- decrease resting HR (enhances PNS)
- Increase LV mass and radius
- Increase VO2 max
How does blood pressure change during exercise?
systolic BP increases (sympathetic constriction of core vessels)
diastolic BP decreases (sympthetic dilation of peripheral vessels)
How does exercise training reduce angina?
- it reduces resting HR and systolic BP, this delays angina which is a result of HR and SBP
What is a MET?
metabolic equivalents are a ratio of the energy used doing an activity versus the energy used at rest. Higher METS=higher intensity
What risk factors does exercise modify?
- diabetes
- HDL levels
- HTN
- Stress
- Obesity
How to explain what the intensity of exercise should be in an exercise prescription?
Rate of perceived exertion:
0-2: have enough breath to sing
3-5: have enough breath to talk
6-10: breathing heavily
OR
Heart Rate 60-70% of (220-age) in non-medicated individuals. Have to do an exercise test in medicated individuals
Standard exercise prescription
Frequency: 3-5 x wk
Intensity: 3-4 RPE
Time: 30-45 minutes, not including warm up
Type: aerobic, strengthening, flexibility
