Cardiac cycle Flashcards
What are the stages of the Cardiac cycle?
Atrial systole, Ventricular systole, Ventricular diastole
What happens in Atrial systole?
Blood enters into the atria through the inferior/superior vena cava and the pulmonary vein
What happens in Ventricular systole?
Atrium contract to push blood into the ventricles, tricuspid and bicuspid valves close to ensure blood only flows into the ventricles
What happens in Ventricular diastole?
Ventricles contract to push blood into the pulmonary artery and aorta as the semilunar valves open whilst he tricuspid and bicuspid valves shut
What is a cardiac muscles?
A myogenic cell
What does myogenic mean?
A cell that can beat to its own beat, independent of the pacemaker
What is the SAN?
The right atrium has a lot of myogenic cells which make it the pacemaker of the heart, it sets the rate at which the rest of the heart will beat
Why does the left and right sides of the heart beat at a slightly different time?
Because overwise, the blood would be forced out of the heart
