Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
what is systole
period of ventricular/ atrial contraction
what is the cardiac cycle on the left side? 5 steps
- Blood drains into left atrium from lungs along the pulmonary vein
- Raising of the blood pressure in the left atrium forces the bicuspid valve open.
- Contraction of the left atrial muscle (left atrial systole) forces more blood through the valve.
- As soon as left atrial systole (muscle contraction) is over, the left ventricular muscles start to contract. This is called left ventricular systole.
- This forces the bicuspid valve to close and opens the valve in the mouth of the aorta (semilunar valve). Blood then leaves the left ventricle along the aorta.
what is diastole
period of ventricular/ atrial relaxation
what happens during atrial systole
How long does atrial systole last
During atrial systole the left and right atria contract at the same time and push blood into the left and right ventricle
atrial systole lasts 0.1 seconds
what happens during ventricular systole
How long does ventricular systole last
During ventricular systole both ventricles contract, blood is forced to the lungs via the pulmonary trunk or to the rest of the body via the aorta depending on which side of the heart.
atrial ventricular lasts 0.3 seconds
what happens during cardiac diastole
the heart muscles relaxes and the chambers of the heart fill with blood so blood pressure decreases
What is the function of the coronary artery
Function of the coronary arteries is to deliver oxygenated blood to the myocardium
What is systole during the cardiac cycle
the contraction phase
What is diastole during the cardiac cycle
the relaxation phase
