Cardiac Flashcards
1
Q
IHD
A
- Reduced blood supply to the heart
- Usually due to atherosclerosis of coronary arteries
- LOCAL event, thrombus not embolus
2
Q
IHD: Risk Factors
A
- Age
- Smoking
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Increased cholesterol
- Genetic
3
Q
IHD: Clinical Syndromes
A
- Angina (stable - exercise, unstable - occurs whenever)
- Myocardial infarction
- Sudden cardiac death
4
Q
Myocardial Infarction
A
Irreversible myocyte injury occurs after at least 20-40 minutes of severe ischaemia
- Myocardial ischaemia -> ATP depletion -> increased intracellular sodium -> anaerobic production of ATP -> acidosis
- Both myocardial contraction and relaxation are energy dependent
- Metabolic products accumulate locally, possibly causing the pain
5
Q
Hypertension
A
- Increased blood pressure
- HT doubles the risk of cardiovascular diseases
- Above 140/90
