Myocardial Infarction

A

Irreversible myocyte injury occurs after at least 20-40 minutes of severe ischaemia

  • Myocardial ischaemia -> ATP depletion -> increased intracellular sodium -> anaerobic production of ATP -> acidosis
  • Both myocardial contraction and relaxation are energy dependent
  • Metabolic products accumulate locally, possibly causing the pain
