Carcinoma in situ Flashcards
What is carcinoma in situ?
malignancy contained within the basement membrane, they are pre-malignant conditions, usually found on imaging and rarely symptomatic
What are the two main types of carcinoma in situ in the breast?
Ductal carcinoma in situ and lobular carcinoma in situ
What is ductal carcinoma in situ?
most common type of non-invasive breast cancer, malignancy of the ductal tissue in the breast and contained within the basement membrane
What investigations are done for ductal carcinoma in situ?
detected in screening and appears as microcalcifications on mammography, confirmed by biopsy
What is the management for DCIS?
Complete wide excision and if widespread or multifocal may need complete mastectomy
What is lobular carcinoma in situ?
malignancy of the secretory lobules of the breast that are confined within the basement membrane, rarer than DCIS
When is LCIS usually diagnosed?
Before menopause
What are the investigations for LCIS?
Incidental finding in biopsy of breast
What is the management for LCIS?
Monitoring is low grade, bilateral prophylactic mastectomy can be preformed for BRCA 1 or 2
