Benign tumours Flashcards
What are the 5 types of benign tumours of the breast?
Fibroadenoma, adenoma, papilloma, lipoma, phyllodes tumours
Who do fibroadenomas usually occur in?
women of reproductive age
What tissue doe fibroadenomas arise from?
stromal and epithelial of the duct lobules
How will fibroadenomas present on examination?
Highly mobile (breast mouse) well defined, rubbery and usually less than 5cm, can be multiple and bilateral
What is the malignant potential of fibroadenomas?
very low
What is an adenoma of the breast?
Benign glandular tumour that is typically in older females, become nodular and may mimic malignancy
Where do papillomas usually occur?
Subarerolar region, less than 1cm from the nipple
How will papillomas present, investigated and treated?
with bloody or clear nipple discharge, similar to ductal carcinomas on imaging so will need a biopsy, treated with microdochectomy
What is a lipoma of the breast?
soft and mobile benign adipose tumour
What are phyllodes tumours?
rare fibroepithelial tumours, made of epithelial and stroll tissue, grow rapidly
Why is it important to distinguish phyllodes tumours from fibroadenomas (which they look like)
As they have malignant potential so should be excised
How will benign breast lumps usually compare to malignant breast lumps?
Usually smoother and more mobile
What should occur if someone has a breast lump to investigate?
triple assessment- examination, imaging and histology
