Carboxylic acids Flashcards
What is a carboxylic acid?
A carboxylic acid is a molecule containing the carboxyl functional group (COOH). This is always at the end of the chain.
Whats the reaction when a metal oxide reacts a carboxylic acid?
metal oxide + carboxylic acid = salt + water
Whats the reaction when a metal hydroxide reacts with a carboxylic acid?
metal hydroxide + carboxylic acid = salt + water
whats the reaction when a metal carbonate reacts with carboxylic acid?
metal carbonate + carboxylic acid = salt + water + carbon dioxide
How do you name a salt?
Take the metal part of the base.
Remove the ending of the acid “oic acid” and replace it with “oate”
Join with two names together putting the metal first.
