Carbon Cycle EQ3 Flashcards
Efe tribe are negatively affected by commercial exploitation
- Their houses are made of wood and leaves
- Their food supply comes from the animals that also inhabit the area
- They use plants to make medicines
Kuznet’s curve
- This is based on economic principles. It suggests that as a country developed, damage to the environment with be high at first as technology improves, but begins to fall as technology becomes more efficient
- In emerging countries such as Indonesia, large scale deforestation is occurring compared to afforestation occurring in developed countries
Impact of rising temperatures on human wellbeing in the Arctic
- Ablation of glacial ice will alter runoff and cause more local river floods
- People in the Arctic may experience building and structural collapse due to permafrost thawing. People may be forced to relocate or be trapped in isolated communities by extreme weather hazards
Impact of climate change on coastal communities
Protecting mangroves:
- Globally, 50% of all mangrove forests have been lost since 1950
- Mangroves provide a range of benefits, including prevention of coastline erosion, providing protection and shelter from extreme weather and providing nurseries for coastal fish
Food:
- 500 million of the poorest people on Earth rely on fisheries for food and income
- Climate change is altering the distribution and productivity of species
- Coral reefs provide shelter for 25% of marine animals, however acid acidification and warming climate is leading to coral bleaching, negatively impacting the local food source for coastal areas
Tourism:
- Higher water temperatures in 2016 caused bad coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef. Coral reefs are tourist attractions, but damage to the coral can negatively impact the locals that rely on tourism
