Carbon Cycle Flashcards
Carbon
is the chemical element with symbol the C and is an essential component in chemical reactions that sustain life, such as cellular respiration. It is part of CO2 (carbon dioxide) which is stored in the atmosphere, and all living things contain billions of carbon atoms in their cells. It can be stored in many different places such as plants, the ocean, coal deposits, etc.
Atmosphere
the layers of gases around the Earth. We can measure the composition of the atmosphere from the air bubbles trapped in the ice (co2, o2, n2 etc.) Any gases in the atmosphere that absorb heat are called GHG.
Troposphere
where weather occurs. 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% other gases
Stratosphere
where airplanes travel, air is calmer here. Also where the ozone layer is located.
Mesosphere
where meteors burn up
Thermosphere
where the ISS is located
Exosphere
where most satellites are found
Biosphere
the part that layers the Earth where living things such as plants, humans, and animals are located. Plants and animals affect the amount of gas.
Geosphere/Lithosphere
the part that layers the earth where rocks, non-living things are located such as rocks, minerals, soil, etc.
Hydrosphere
the part that layers the earth that includes all water (solid, liquid, gas form) on Earth.
Carbon Dioxide
a common, and naturally occurring gas that is represented with CO2 (two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom). Carbon dioxide is one of the biggest factors in GHE, makes up about a quarter in natural GHE, and makes up 0.0385% (385-400 PPM) of the atmosphere. CO2 is involved in cellular respiration (CO2 produced when exhaling) and photosynthesis (is used for energy for plants). The amount of CO2 are caused by the seasons.
Natural Carbon
Carbon caused by natural processes such as volcanic eruptions, decomposition, cellular respiration, and forest fires.
Cellular Respiration
the process in which humans and animals release carbon dioxide as a waste product and back into the atmosphere by converting carbohydrates and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. During cellular respiration, energy is released within the cells of the organism for the purpose of growth, repair, anNd reproduction.
Photosynthesis
an important process in which oxygen and carbon are cycled through ecosystems. It is a chemical reaction that converts solar energy into chemical energy, and is used by plants, plankton, algae. During photosynthesis, carbon (in the form of CO2 in the atmosphere), enters through the leaves of plants and reacts with the water when exposed to sunlight which produces energy-rich sugars (aka carbohydrates and oxygen)
Decompositions
the breaking down of dead organic matter. Decomposers converts organic molecules such as cellulose back into carbon dioxide, which gets released into the atmosphere. EX of decomposers: bacteria, animals (pillbugs and worms),fungi (mushrooms).
