Q

What is Biofuel?

A
  • Fuel made from living matter
  • such as crops, forestry or fishery products or forms of waste
  • Primary biofuel includes wood, fuelwood, and wood chips. Anything natural and unprocessed primarily for heating and cooking or electricity generation
  • Secondary Biofuel, processing biofuels into ethanol and bio-diesel. Used in vehicles and industry

What is out-gassing?

A
  • Release of gas stored or dissolved due to changes in heat or pressure
  • Carbon is released by metamorphic activity at plate boundaries or hot spots

What does Biogeochemical mean?

A
  • Transfer of elements and compounds such as carbon, between living organisms and the physical environment through chemical processes that create new compounds and elements in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere

Q

Why is carbon important?

A
  • Main constituent of all living cells (50% of all biomass, 18% of Human bodies)
  • Can form long chained molecules which are the basis for fats, carbs, nucleic acids and proteins
  • Component of fossil fuels needed for non-electric travel

– Use in nanotube for computers

  • Element of our atmosphere making u the balance
18
Q

What is a carbon store?

A
  • Places where carbon is held such as the atmosphere in a gaseous form

Examples include

  • The atmosphere, CO2 and CH4
  • The hydrospehere, Gaseous dissolved in water, forming shells marine animals
  • The Liphosphere, Solid layer of the earth, carbonates in limstone and fossil fuels
  • The cryosphere, Gaseous, dissolved in ice
  • The Pedosphere, mainly in dead organic material
19

What is a carbon flow?

A

The movement of carbon between carbon stores
