Carbon cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What is Biofuel?
A
- Fuel made from living matter
- such as crops, forestry or fishery products or forms of waste
- Primary biofuel includes wood, fuelwood, and wood chips. Anything natural and unprocessed primarily for heating and cooking or electricity generation
- Secondary Biofuel, processing biofuels into ethanol and bio-diesel. Used in vehicles and industry
1
Q
What are Energy Pathways?
A
- Route an energy type is transferred from production to consumption areas such as a pipeline or a shipping route
2
Q
What are Fluxes?
A
- Movement or transfer of carbon between stores such as the atmosphere and the hydrosphere
3
Q
What is out-gassing?
A
- Release of gas stored or dissolved due to changes in heat or pressure
- Carbon is released by metamorphic activity at plate boundaries or hot spots
4
Q
What is sequestration?
A
- Processes where carbon is removed from atmosphere and storred in plants and soil ,absorption into oceans or through carbon capture and storage from power stations
5
Q
What are Petagrams and Gigatons?
A
- Units used to measure carbon equal to a billion tonnes or a trillion kilos
6
Q
What does Biogeochemical mean?
A
- Transfer of elements and compounds such as carbon, between living organisms and the physical environment through chemical processes that create new compounds and elements in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere
7
Q
What is Biomass?
A
- Organic matter used as fuel, especially in power stations, especially in power stations
8
