carbon cycle Flashcards
what is the carbon cycle
living tissue contains carbon, because they contain proteins, fats and carbohydrates. the carbon in these tissues is recycled in various processes
what is the main reservoir for carbon
rocks
step 1
carbon enters the atmosphere as. carbon dioxide from respiration and combustion
step 2
carbon dioxide is absorbed by producers to make carbohydrates in photosynthesis
step 3
animals feed on the plant passing the carbon compounds along the food chain
step 4
most of the carbon they consume is exhaled as carbon dioxide formed during respiration. these animals and plants eventually die
step 5
the dead organisms are eaten by decomposers and the carbon in their body is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (in some conditions decomposition is blocked)
step 6
the plant and animal material may then be available as fossil fuel for future combustion
easy peasy version
1- carbon enters atmosphere as CO2 from rest and combustion
2- CO2 is absorbed by producers to make carbs in photosynthesis
3- animals eat plants passing the carbon compounds
4- the carbon is then exhaled as CO2. they then die
5- dead things are eaten my decomposers and the carbon is returned to the cycle as CO2
6- the plant/animal material can then be available as fossil fuels
