Carbohydrates Flashcards
What is a Carbohydrate?
A carbohydrate is a type of molecule that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen with a 1:2:1 ratio.
Identify the elements present in Carbohydrates
Oxygen, hydrogen and carbon.
Describe the difference between Monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides
A monosacchrides is a simple sugar that has one saccharide, while a Disaccharide are two monosaccharides joined together and a polysaccharide is a more complex saccharide that has three or more monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds.
Provide 3 examples of foods that are a good source of Carbohydrates
Bread, pasta and rice.
Provide 3 examples of foods that are not a good source of Carbohydrates
Meat, vegatables and fruit.
Recall an example of a Monosaccharide
Glucose
Recall an example of a Disaccharide
Sucrose (table sugar)
Recall an example of a Polysaccharide
Starch, glycogen and cellulose.
Write a word equation for photosynthesis
Sunlight+Carbon dioxide+water ===> Glucose (sugar)+ Oxygen
Define a condensation reaction
A condensation reaction is when 2 molecules combine and combust forming water
Recall the name and structure of a glycosidic linkage
Circle the hydroxyl groups on a monosaccharide
OH
Define a hydrolysis reaction
Hydrolysis is any chemical reaction in which a molecule of water breaks one or more chemical bonds.
Hydrolysis reactions
Hydrolysis reactions are the reverse of condensation reactions. In a hydrolysis reaction, a larger molecule forms two (or more) smaller molecules and water is consumed as a reactant. Hydrolysis (“hydro” = water and “lysis” = break) involves adding water to one large molecule to break it into multiple smaller molecules.
Recall that digestion reactions are hydrolysis reactions
