Carbohydrates Flashcards
Carbohydrate
A carbohydrate is a biomolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms,
Disaccharides
Simple sugars, (2 sugars) formed by linking 2 monosaccharides, bond is called Glycosidic bond,
The makeup of sucrose, maltose and lactose.
- Sucrose = Glucose + Fructose
- Maltose = Glucose + Glucose
- Lactose = Glucose + Galactose
Biomolecule
Any organic molecule (contains carbon)
Polysaccharides
Complex carbs, (many sugars) formed by bonding many monosaccharides by condensation with a Glycosidic bond
Examples of polysaccharides
- Lipids
- Nucleic acids
- Proteins
Which NUCLEOTIDE does Thymine bind with?
Aedine
Which NUCLEOTIDE does Cytosine bind with?
Guanine
Haemoglobin
a protein that folds up to a globular shape to help transport oxygen in blood
Collagen
a protein that form rope like fibres ideal for firmly binding different body parts together
Enzymes
- Enzymes are proteins
- They speed up biochemical reactions (Breaking down of foods)
- They are known as catalysts
- Most enzymes end in “ase”
- They reduce the activation energy
