Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the 4 major families of organic molecule?
- Proteins
- Nucleic acids
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
What are carbohydrates?
Hydrated carbon
What are the 3 main classes of carbohydrates?
- Monosaccharides (simple sugars)
- Oligosaccharides (short chains of monosaccharide units)
- Polysaccharides (Sugar polymers containing 20+ monosaccharide units)
What does ‘ose’ at the end of a word imply?
It’s a sugar
What is the hydroxyl functional group?
R - OH
What is the aldehyde functional group?
R - COH
What is the ketone functional group?
R - CO - R’
What are isomers?
Same molecular formula but different structures
How do monosaccharides provide energy?
During cellular respiration, C-C bonds and C-OH bonds in glucose are broken in discrete steps to release energy that can be harvested into ATP
How do disaccharides form?
- When monosaccharides are linked by O-glycosidic bonds
- Dehydration reaction
What is a glycosidic bond?
A bond that forms between carbohydrates
Glucose + Glucose = ?
Maltose
Glucose + Fructose = ?
Sucrose
Glucose + Galactose = ?
Lactose
What is the structure of cellulose?
Beta - 1,4 - glycosidic bond
Straight chain shape
