Carbohydrate Flashcards
Carbohydrates are separated into two categories:
simple and complex
simple carbohydrate?
Are sugars that occur naturally in foods
Define CARBOHYDRATE
A large class of nutrients, including sugars, starch, and fibers, that function as the body’s primary source of energy.
COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES
(POLYSACCHARIDES)
Long chains of many sugars, including starches and fibers.
Glycogen
Is the glucose stored in the body
Glycogen is stored in two places in the body
The liver and the muscles
Ketone bodies
When fat is burned for energy without any carbohydrates present, the process is incomplete and result in ketone bodies
Ketosis
Ketosis is when the body burns stored fat for energy
Carbohydrates function
Carbohydrate spares protein from being burned for energy.
Carbohydrates help the body to use fat efficiently
You need at least 100 to 150 grams of carbohydrate daily to spare protein
Fiber
Is a complex form of carbohydrate
Fiber function
Fiber promotes intestinal health
lowers cholesterol
and reduces type 2 diabetes risk.
Whats the class of Simple carbohydrates (sugar)
Simple carbohydrates include monosaccharides and disaccharides.
Monosaccharides are the building blocks of other carbohydrates.
Monosaccharides simple sugars includes
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
Fructose, the sweetest natural sugar, is also found in honey as well as in fruits.
galactose, is almost always linked to glucose to make milk sugar, a
disaccharide.
Disaccharide means the double sugars
Disaccharide (simple sugar) includes
Maltose
Lactose
sucrose
lactose, is commonly called milk sugar because it occurs in milk.
Sucrose extracted from sugar cane and sugar beets is made of two monosaccharides
Fructose and glucose
Added sugar
Are sweeteners added to food during processing
No
High-fructose corn syrup
Corn syrup treated with an enzyme that converts some of the glucose to fructose.
Health issues resulting in too much sugar
Dental carries
Diabetes
Obesity
Heart disease
Hypoglycemia
Hyperactivity in children
Diabetes
is a disorder in which the body does not metabolize carbohydrates properly.
