What are the functions of carbohydrates?

A

Body’s heat and energy
Excess carbohydrates are stored as fat ( adipose tissue) which insulates the body
Dietary fibre is vital for the moment of waste through the intestines, prevents constipation and helps prevent disease of bowel e.g bowel cancer

A

Sugar is formed out of carbohydrates that can be called many different names e.g glucose , fructose, sucrose and maltose. To much sugar in body can cause obesity and dental decay

What do y have to do to reduce sugar intake

A

Replace sugary snacks with nuts and fresh fruit
Avoid sugary drinks . Water is better
Avoid sweets , cake , biscuits and desserts
Use artificial sweeteners if using one ( e.g Splenda )

A

Dietary fibre is also called roughage or cellulose .
Fibre is found in unprocessed foods , such as wholegrain cereal and fresh fruit and vegetables.
