CAPSLE researchers Flashcards
CAPLSE- effectiveness- ease of use STRENGTH
Unlike other programmes that require external trainers, CAPSLE integrates into school circulum without adding to teachers workload
CAPLSE- effectiveness- evidence of effectiveness- STRENGTH
Fonacgy et al
Conducted a study of 1,345 children in 9 schools
CAPSLE reduced bullying and aggression more than usual school approach, and improvements were maintained for a year.
Academic performance also improved two years later
CAPLSE- effectiveness- limited effectiveness- WEAKNESS
Fonagy et al
Found CAPSLE reduced bullying but also slightly decreased empathy.
Also it wasn’t significantly better than psychiatric consultation
CAPSLE - ethics- ethical benefits - Strength
Instead of singling out bullies for intervention, CAPSLE treats bullying as a whole school issue
This then prevents the bullies from being stigmatised and protects their self esteem
CAPSLE - ethics - ethical criticisms - Weakness
By treating bulling as a whole school issue rather than an individual problem its shifting the responsibility away from the bullies
Some people think it creates a ‘moral equalence’ between bullies and their victims so the bullies feel no form of guilt or remorse to the victim. Therefore no lesson has actually been learnt by the bully
CAPSLE - social implications - low cost - strength
The programme avoids expensive referrals for bullies and doesn’t relay on commercial materials
The initial training does cost but is still more affordable than others
CAPSLE - Social implications - high return
Although it requires staff at first, the programme eventually reduces bullying
It also improves teaching and learning and boosts academic achievement
This then benefits both individuals and society
