Capno Flashcards
Define Capno
Display of measurement of Co2 concentration in real time for every breath producing ETCO2 capnography.
2 components of capnography
- Capnogram
2. Capnometry
2 mesurements of capno
Quantity and quality
ETCO2+ Wave+ RR
Color assay, colormetry
3 types of capno devices
IR spectroscopy, side stream sampling, microstream tech
Explain ABC assessment with capno
A: steep, upslope, prolonged
B: ETCO2 Waveform baseline
C: constant, long/short intervals ETCO2 variations
4 clinical uses of capno
- MNG
- Monitor
- Intubation
- Perfusion
Explain difference between pulse oximetry and capno
measures % of o2 and monoxide bound to the Hb and is slow to show signs of deterioration because the blood must circulate throughout the body before reaching the IR light again. Where as capno measures the amount of ETCO2 for each breath shows immediate changes in patient’s condition in regards to metabolism, perfusion and ventilation.
4 things to check in apneic waveform
DOPE D- dislodged O- obstructed airway P- Pneumothorax E- equipment
11 reasons for ETCO2 decreases
Hypothermia, PE, Obstructed, drop in CO, drop in BP, pul. edema, sepsis, MI, Hyperventilation, EQ
10 reasons for ETCO2 increases
Hyperthermia, increase in CO, high BP, COPD, Hypoventilation, air trapping, bronchospasm, Rebreathing, Fever, brain injury
2 factors of air movement
Lung compliance
