Prepare patient
Explain the procedure and obtain consent
Prepare the site
Side of finger in adult or heel of the foot in children
Clean with gauze and water and dry thoroughly
Prepare glucometer
Maintain in a hygenic condition
insert the strip
wait for device to be ready to accept the blood sample
Draw blood droplet
Prepare lancet, twist off cap
prick the area with the lancet
allow droplet to appear without squeezing
lancet disposal
discard lancet into sharps disposal container
apply glucometer
touch the strip to the droplet
dress test site
apply pressure with gauze
dispose of contaminated dressings
report
accurately document blood sugar results
