capacitors Flashcards
capacitance
the amount of charge its able to store per unit of potencial difference
capacitance equation
C = Q/V
capacitor
an electrical component that can store electrical charge
made up of 2 electrical conducting plates separated by an electrical insulator
what happens when a capacitor is connected to a power source
charge builds up on its plates
one plate becomes negatively charge, another becomes positive
the plates are separated by dielectric insulator so no charge can move between the plates
this means potential difference build between the plates
How useful is a capacitor
store rerlatively low amounts of charge and usually used to provide power for short amounts of time
useful as it can store charge until neededand then discharge all of its charge in a fraction of a second, making it dangerous
uses of a capacitor
camera flash
ultracapcitors
back up power
energy stored
when a capacitor is charge, one plate is positive, the other negative making an attractive force between the plates
this requires energy supplied by the power source and stored as electrical potential energy
when charge is released so is the electrical potential energy
equation for energy
E = 0.5 Q VV
