Capacitance Flashcards
How does a capacitor complete a circuit? (4stages)
1) electrons are repelled from the negative side of the battery
2) electrons are stored in the negative plate
3) on other side, electrons are repelled away from the negative plate, so second plate becomes positive
4) electrons attracted to the +ve terminal of the battery.
What is capacitance?
How much charge can be stored per unit of potential difference.
Revise current time and charge time graphs of capacitor charge and discharge.
Don’t forget to revise graphs of energy stored.
What is the time constant equal to?
RC
Resistance x Capacitance
Define time constant
The time taken for the charge of the capacitor to decrease to 37% (1/e) of it’s initial charge when discharging through a fixed resistor.
