Capacitance Flashcards
What is an electric field?
The electric field of a charge is the space around the charge in which an electric force due to that charge is experienced.
State Coulomb’s Law.
Any two point charges exert an electrical force on each other that is proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the separation.
What is the formula for Coulomb’s Law.
F ~ Qq/r^2
K = 1/(4piepsilon)
What is the electric field strength?
It is the force per unit positive charge
What is the formula for electric field strength?
E = kQ/r^2
What is electric potential?
Electric potential at a point is the work done in bringing a unit positive charge from infinity to that point.
What is the formula for electric potential?
V = kQ/r
What does potential difference mean in reference to 2 point charges?
The potential difference between 2 points A and B from an isolated charge Q is defined as the work done in taking a unit positive charge from B to A
Describe the relationship between electric potential energy and the movement of a point charge.
- > If as positive charge is moved in the direction of an electric field, its electric potential energy will decrease.
- > If a negative charge is moved in the direction of the electric field, its electric potential energy will increase.
What happens to potential energy if a charge is accelerated in a field?
It’s electric potential energy is converted to kinetic energy.
What is the graphical relationship between electrical potential and the distance from the center?
The field strength = -potential gradient.
