CAP 8 Flashcards
Describe bacterial colonisation
0-4 hours
Strep mitis, mutans, oralis, sanguis, Actinomyces spp, Gram -ve bacteria
When does microcolony formation take place?
4-24 hours
When does the initation of caries lesions occur?
1-14 days
What happens to the extracellular and intracellular polysaccharides when contact with plaque matrix?
They turn to acid
What is the ecological plaque hypothesis?
Plaque can accumulate on all tooth surfaces
Microflora can change due to sugar etc
Removal of plaque and sugar= reversible
Describe the outer layer of dentine caries? (DDII)
Demineralised, denatured, infected, irriversible
Describe the inner layer of dentine caries (DMIR)
Demineralised, minimally infected, revrsible
What is ultra conservative caries?
Covering a cavity with composite to kill off the bacteria
What are the steps of Stepwise excavation? (4)
- Remove superficial layer of infective necrotic dentine
- Place Ca OH lining and GI
- Leave for 6-12 months
- Re clean cavity and restore
