CAP 2 Flashcards
Name 4 non carious tooth loss reason
Attrition, Abrasion, Erosion, Abfraction
What is the acidogenic theory?
Acid is produced form fermented sugars
Bread+Saliva+Bacteria+Extracted teeth= demineralisation.
Describe the enamel core
Prism core
Tightly packed hydropxyapatite crystals
Describe the enamel sheath
The periphery
Less tightly packed crystals so more means for demineralisation as acid can diffuse in the gaps
Describe the Translucent zone (3)
1-2% mineral loss
Few large pores due to loss of prism periphery
Penetrated by Quinoline (fills prism periphery)
Describe the Dark zone (5)
Dark with Quinoline 5-10% porosity 90-95% of lesions Large and small pores Demineralisation and remineralisation occurring
Describe the Body of lesion (3)
Straie of Retzius more obvious
20-25% porosity
Enamel is mostly translucent
Describe the Surface zone (3)
Protected Highly mineralised (high F content) Re laying down of minerals dissolved by deeper layers
What is arrested caries?
Remineralised caries
How do caries become arrested?
Change in the environment (altered diet, fluoride, plaque control)
Arrested caries can be brown, what staining is that?
Exogenous
