CAP 2 PREP Flashcards
explain what are the two methods used to calculate the strength of an ionic bond
theoretical method -perfect ionic model: the idea that each ion is a perfect sphere /point charges. and is purely ionic so has no covalent character
experimental method -Born Haber cycle:
in this model ions are considered as polarisable. and bonding is ionic and some covalent character.
describe how you would distinguish between seperate samples of the two stereoisomers
shine plane polarised light. enantomers will rotate in oppsoite directions.
explain how a racemic mixture forms
it has a planar shape so nucleophile has equal chance of attacking from either side.so equal proportions of each enantiomer forming a racemic mixture.
explain why there is an attraction between a C=C double bond and Br2
the covalent bond in C=C means it has high electron density. so the Br-Br becomes polarised and delta + Br is attracted to C=C.
