Canine/Feline Cornea Flashcards
What are the parts of clinical assessment of canine/feline cornea?
- previous Hx
- eyelid anatomy
- facial anatomy/globe size
- tear prod’n - qlty/qty
- breed
- clin disorders
- contralateral eye
What is the ultimate aid to the eye?
Slit lamp biomicroscope
White colour in the cornea?
oedema, lipid, scarring, infectious agent
Red colour change in cornea?
neovascularisation, stromal haemorrhage, symlepharon, neoplasia
Pigmented lesion colour change in cornea?
superficial benign melanin, sequestrum, uveal pigment - usually deep
What are categories of corneal lesions?
- congenital non-inflammatory
- acq’d non-inflammatory
- non-ulcerative inflammatory dz
- ulcerative inflammatory dz
congenital non-inflammatory corneal lesions
persistent pupillary membranes
acquired non-inflammatory corneal lesions
lipid keratopathy, band keratopathy, corneal endothelial dystrophy
Non-ulcerative inflammatory dz corneal lesions
Superficial keratitis –> mechanical, infectious, pannus, eosinophilic keratitis, pigmentary keratitis, herpes virus keratitis
Ulcerative inflammatory dz corneal lesions
Physical, chemical, infectious, dry eye, neurotropic, immunological, metabolic
What are some important instruments needed?
- small suture needles
- micro-pointed speculated needles if suturing cornea
- binocular magnifying loupe
- common ophthalmology sutures (Vicryl 4/0, 6/0, 8/0, 9/0)
What is condition is likely present in this dog? What is it?
Lagophthalmos - unable to close the eyelids; dry eyes in the middle of eye b/c cannot close completely; poor healing
Pugs commonly have this condition. what is it?
- result of exposure dryness
- inflamed
- BVs come on
- pigment on cornea
- wide open eyes, poor blink - cornea unstable, difficult to heal
What condition is?
- dry eye - not enough tears
- high inflammation w/ time
What condition?
focal oedema - inside of cornea not controlling fluid in/out of cornea consistently, integrity of inner film like pump, like a little circle, bilateral
What condition?
- fat crystals, different shapes possible
- Mature to point & stabilise
- Genetic predisposition, often bilateral
What condition?
- Eyelid hair
What condition?
- Feline Keratitis
- Caused by herpes, activated in stress/immunocompetency
What condition?
- Corneal Sequestrum
- cats & herpes
- dead/dying in cornea rise to surface
- excise & graft commonly needed
What condition? How is it treating?
Corneal FB
Txt: remove - do not grasp. Use needle/blade at 90 degrees to FB & milk out; hole self-selas usually; medicate for uveitis
Clinical Signs of Corneal ulceration
- blepharospasm
- pain
- epiphora
- aqueous flare
- inflamm cells in anterior chamber
- hypopyon
- conjunctivitis/episcleritis
- corneal oedema
- miosis
How to dx an ulcer?
appearance
fluorescein stain
eye may not open - use topical anaesthetic
What level of corneal ulceration is this?
shallow
What level of corneal ulcer is this?
30% depth
