Distemper symptoms
Transient fever, leukopenia, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, cough, vomiting/diarrhea, anorexia, dehydration, secondary bacterial infections, encephalitis
Distemper
Highly contagious, high fatality rate, animals 3-6 months of age most susceptible.
Distemper treatment
Antibiotics to combat secondary infections, supportive care (fluids, electrolytes, nutritional support), isolate and disinfect area
Viral hepatitis/adenovirus type 1
Causes blue eye. Symptoms include fever, anorexia, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain
Viral hepatitis/adenovirus type 2
Causes infections canine hepatitis, primarily affects respiratory system, passed in body secretions
Viral hepatitis/adenovirus type 2 symptoms
Fever, lethargy, harsh dry cough, anorexia, difficulty breathing, serous nasal discharge, may progress into fatal pneumonia
Parvoviral enteritis
1 infectious disease in the US, extremely resistant virus, bleach is one of the few things that will kill it. Primarily affects puppies and animals with a compromised immune system
Parvovirus symptoms
Vomiting, lethargy, fever, leukopenia, anorexia
diarrhea - foul smelling, mucoid, frank blood, sloughing of intestinal lining
Parvovirus diagnosis
Leukopenia, fecal test, ELISA assay
Parvovirus treatment
Fluids, electrolytes, dextrose, antibiotics, antiemetic as needed, NEVER antidiarrheal
Corona virus
Viral disease causing mild enteritis, not as serious as parvo
Corona signs
Sudden onset of bloody diarrhea, anorexia, +/- vomiting, fever, affects puppies under 8 weeks of age
Corona treatment
Supportive care, symptomatic care, fluid therapy, antidiarrheal, antiemetics
