What are the risk factors of Candidiasis?
Immunosuppressed, antibiotic use, diet, stress, premature birth, burns, prolonged hospital stay (anything that compromises your immune system)
Those at extremes of age at most risk
How does it manifest?
Superficial mucocutaneous: oral candidiasis, vaginal candidiasis, diaper area candidiasis, etc.
Can also be invasive, esophageal candidiasis in AIDS, systemic dissemination, etc
May involve virtually any organ
Candida species are the #1 cause of __________
fungal infections in immunosuppressed people
How is diagnosis typically confirmed?
Diagnosis depends on site
Superficial: wet mount looking for hyphae, pseudohyphae or budding yeast
Systemic: blood cultures, urine cultures, biopsies
