Cancer Vocab Flashcards
Cancer
Diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues.
Benign
Condition, growth, or tumor that is not cancerous.
Dysplasia
An increase in abnormal cell growth.
Malignant
Tumors that are cancerous.
Carcinogen
A substance that causes cancer.
Oncologist
Doctors whom diagnose and treat cancer.
Metastasis
The spread of cancer cells from where its originated, to a different part of the body.
Tumor
Abnormal mass of tissue built up when cells grow and divide more than they should.
Mortality
Being mortal, destined to die.
Morbidity
Having a disease, or having symptoms of a disease.
Mutation
Change in the sequence of DNA.
Hyperplasia
Increase of cell production in healthy organs or tissues.
Invasive Cancer
Cancer that has spread beyond the layer of tissue in which it developed and is growing into surrounding, healthy tissues
Leukemia
Cancer including abnormal multiplying amounts of white blood cells in the bloodstream, formed in the tissues.
Adenoma
Noncancerous tumors.
Sarcoma
Type of cancer that begins in the bones or soft tissues.
Metastasize
To spread from one part of the body to another.
Melanoma
Form of cancer that begins in the cells that consist of melanin.
Carcinoma
Type of cancer formed in epithelial tissue.
Prophylactic
Ames test
method used to test potential carcinogenic effect of chemicals
Anaplastic
Cancer cells that divide rapidly and have little or no resemblance to normal cells.
Angiogenesis
Formation on new blood cells.
Apoptosis
A type of cell death in which a series of molecular steps in a cell lead to its death.
Biopsy
Procedure to remove a sample of tissues or cells, to be used in laboratory.
Brachytherapy
Treatment at a short distance during which radioactive sources are placed in close proximity to, or directly in the treatment volume.
Cytokine
A type of protein that is made by certain immune and non-immune cells and has an effect on the immune system.
Combination Chemotherapy
Treatment using more than one anticancer drug.
Etiology
Cause of disease.
