What at the acute treatments given to patients with prostate cancer?
Active surveillance, surgery, hormone therapy (ADT), radiotherapy
Which side effect of cancer treatment has been shown to often have a long term debilitation effect on the individual’s quality of life?
Cancer-related fatigue
What is the name of the lymph node that is checked with dye for spreading from the breast tumour?
Sentinal Lymph node
What is the most extensive form of breast cancer surgery?
Mastectomy.
What are the two types of radiotherapy?
1) External beam radiotherapy- fires beams of radiation at cancer cells from multiple angles.
2) Brachytherapy- radioactive seeds or pellets implanted near to or in the tumor and left there permenantly.
What is a picc line?
What exercise should you not do if patient has a picc line?
peripherally inserted central catheter used for IV chemotherapy treatment.
Upper body exercise as this can cause blood clots in central line.
What is a typical chemotherapy regime?
Chemotherapy drugs are most commonly administered in combinations for a total of 6 cycles. 3 weeks between cycles.
Non-modifiable risk factors for breast cancer
Being a woman; having a relative who’s had breast cancer; having denser breast tissue (denser = more glands and less fat).
Modifiable risk factors for breast cancer?
Parity- having had no children; children above 30 years old- thought to be due to having had less mentrual cycles.
Oral contraceptive pill
Alcohol
Being overweight/obese
lack of physical activity
combined hormone replacement therapy (estrogen and progesterone)
Non-breast feeding.
What are the potential treatments for breast cancer?
Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone treatment and biologically targeted treatments such as herceptin.
Most will have combination of at least two treatments.
What treatments are given to colorectal patients?
Surgery primarily (ends with stoma or not)
Early stage may receive intravenous chemo
Chemo given to patients with dukes stage C if patient can tolerate treatment
neoadjuvant treatment can be given prior to surgery.
