Cancer Terminology Flashcards
Hyperplasia
Increase in cell number occurs in response to a stimulus
Regresses on with drawl of stimulus unless it becomes autonomous –> neoplastic transformation
Hypertrophy
Increase in cells size in response to a stimulus will stop of regression
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Physiological or pathalogical
Atrophy
Loss of size +/or number
Occurs with with drawl of stimulus
Metaplasia
Reversible change from 1 mature cell type to another mature cell type in response to injury
Barrett’s
Neoplasia
Growth without a stimulus
Can be benign, pre malignant, malignant
Squamous papiloma
Benign neoplastic growth with no metastatic potential
carcinoma in situ
Closest to becoming full blown malignancy
Malignancy
Autonomous growth that has invaded beyond its normal location and has metastatic potential
Cancer terminology
Opacity
Rolled edges
High nuclear : cytoplasmic ratio
