a tumour that doesn’t invade its surrounding tissue or spread around the body, they are non-cancerous

A

a tumour that may invade surrounding tissue and can spread throughout your body, they are cancerous

what are the causes of cancer?

A
  • changes is genetic material (caused by carcinogens eg tar in cigarettes)
  • uv lighting and x rays can lead to skin cancer
  • virus infections, cervical cancer
  • lifestyle/diet
  • old age (changes is genetic material)

what are the treatments for cancer?

A
  • chemotherapy: where chemicals are used to stop the cancer cells from dividing
  • radiotherapy: cancer cells are destroyed by targeted doses of radiation, this helps to stop mitosis in the cancerous cells. BUT this can also damage healthy cells

how do lifestyle factors affect tumours?

A

the most common risk factors for cancer are tobacco(smoking), radiation exposure, chemicals, some viruses and bacteria, old age, alcohol, family history of cancer, poor diet, lack of physical activity

what is cancer?

A

cancer is a form of disease and it occurs because of changes that lead to uncontrolled growth and division, tumours then form and don’t respond to the normal cell cycle.
some are COMMUNICABLE, HPV caused by lifestyle or mistakes in the cell cycle
some are NON-COMMUNICABLE
