Canada's growing independence Flashcards
conservative party values
they valued successful and well-educated people and wanted them in charge. They thought Canada should be as loyal and close to Britain as possible.
Liberal party values
they valued political, religious and cultural freedom as well as national unity
Progressive party values
They focused on farmer’s rights and wanted lower freight rates and Tariffs. They also won seats in the 1921 election.
William Lyon Mackenzie King
He was the longest-serving prime minister in Canada. He served three times in office. He served for approximately two years and in 1917, he stood by Laurier’s side against conscription, giving him Quebec’s loyalty. He had a desire for national unity.
Chanak affair
Britain got into a tussle with Turkey at Chanak, and Turkey is on the losing side of WW1, threatening to take control of the area. Britain sent in troops and ships and asked Canada for military support if War developed, but King knew Canadians were isolated and didn’t want to get involved in foreign conflicts so he replied that only the Canadian parliament could decide whether or not to send troops. This was different from ww1 when Canada immediately stood with Britain after they declared war and automatically joined the war. King now made it clear that Canada would make it’s own foreign policy.
Halibut treaty 1923
This was an agreement made between the US and Canada on the fishing season for Halibut in the north pacific. It didn’t concern Britain and King insisted only representatives from Canada and the United States should sign the treaty despite Britain always signing treaties on Canada’s behalf. Britain eventually agreed on this rule and Canada could sign treaties with a foreign country on her own.
