Response to fustration
Occur in children 18 months - 4 yrs
Usually triggered by not getting their own way, tiredness, hunger, boredom, feeling ignored/wanting attention, being worried or anxious

A

Antecedents - what happened minutes before the episode
Behaviour - what exactly did the episode consist of
Consequences - what happened as a result, including what the parent did and they outcome.

What are some ways of managing a temper tantrum?

A

Affection and attention before the tantrum, distraction, avoiding antecedents, ignoring, time out, holding firmly if child putting himself or others in danger.

Describe the key features of Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder

A

Repetitive and persistant pattern of defiant behaviour
Frequency and severity beyond age appropriate norms
e.g. truancy, stealing, violence, arson.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a milder form, tends to affect younger children e.g. temper tantrums, refusal to comply with rules.

What is the prognosis of Conduct Disorder

A

40% of 7-8 year olds with conduct disorder become convicted delinquents as teenagers
Predictor of anti-social PD in adulthood. (50%)

Impaired Social Interaction, speech and language disorder, imposition of routines with ritualistic and repetitive behaviours.
Usually present aged 2-4 when language and social skills normally rapidly expand.
