Think Developmentally, Think Family and Consider Culture

- Start from pregnancy and birth upwards
- Developmental milestones
- Who are their carers
- How is the child or young person functioning physically, socially, emotionally and academically?
- Understand family views regarding mental health and illness.
- Take a collateral history from home and school (e.g. have symptoms of ADHD at school but not at home - probably not ADHD)
- Use standardized rating scales and assessment tools to aid assessment.
