How is it thought ASD can be inherited genetically?
- De novo (spontaneous inheritance)
- Hereditary
What is the main obstetric risk factor for ASD?
- Congenital rubella infection (especially in the first trimester)
What has been found on MRI brain in individuals with ASD?
Increased brain size - particularly in the occipital, parietal and temporal lobes
When is the onset of ASD?
It is a lifelong condition and will always develop before the age of 3, even if it is not diagnosed until later in life.
What are the 3 signs of a good prognosis for patients with ASD?
- Communicative speech at 6 years old and above
- Higher IQ (>50)
- Skills that can be used to secure employment
What proportion of patients with ASD will be unable to live an independent life?

What are the psychological management options for a patient, and their family, with ASD?
- CBT
- Behaviour management programmes
- Applied Behavioural Analysis Program (very intense program, which is 40 hours a week for 3 years)
- TEACCH
- Educational psychology
What are the social management options for a patient, and their family, with ASD?
- Carers
- Respite care
- Education of peers in school and/or siblings
- Educational support (higher chance of learning difficulties)
- Specialised school for patient
What are the pharmacological management options for a patient, and their family, with ASD?
- SSRIs
- Second generation antipsychotics
- Melatonin
