Extreme long shot
Shows landscapes or the view of the whole word/ town/ city
Purpose: used an establishing shot, emphasizes vulnerability, may establish awe inspiring mood
Long shot
Overall view from a distance of a characters environment
Purpose: to establish a setting, to introduce main characters, to indicate emotional separation
Full shot
A variation of the long shot, showing the full subject with the feet at the bottom of the frame and head at the top
Medium shot
Shows the subject from the mid-shin or mid-thigh up
Purpose: to emphasize the relationship between multiple characters, separates characters from background
Close shot
A shot where the view is close to the action, subject is shown from the waist up
Close up
Focuses on the subjects face (details, expressions) it shows either head or head and shoulders. It can also focus on a small object.
Purpose: for emphasis
Extreme close up
A variation of the close-up and singles out a portion of the face or isolates a detail.
Purpose: to call attention to key elements or elements with symbolic meanings, to intensify emotion, to create a horrific impression
Tracking or dolly shot
Single continuous shot made with a camera moving along the ground (usually on dolly)
Subjective shot
Framed from a particular characters point of view (audience sees what character sees).
Aerial shot
Filmed from helicopter, plane, ballon, kite, or blimp.
Crane shot
A shot in which a crane is used to lift the camera above the action
Arc shot
Subject is filmed by encircling or moving camera
Boom shot
A continuous shot made from a pole which a camera has been suspended from
Establishing/ master shot
Shows overall view of a location of all the actors in the scene.
Purpose: to establish the relationship of details which will be emphasized in later shots
Hand held shot
Camera is held by hand
Purpose: create anxiety/ confusion, involves audience directly, add realism
