CAM Therapies Outline
Complimentary alternative medicine, used in chronic conditions where conventional medicine isn’t satisfactory (acute conditions need to be immediately addressed more thoroughly). Patient can choose best for their lifestyle should be informed when selecting conventional treatment to avoid complications Eg postural CAMs in IBS
2 Types of Chamomiles Used in CAM
Roman and Green
Chamomile Constituents and Mode of action
Monoterpenes and Flavonoids (polyphenols). Anti-inflammatory (bisabol component inhibits COX), spasmolytic, antibacterial and antifungal. Used for cramps and as an anti-spasmodic
Liquorace Constituents and Mode of Action
Pentacyclic triterpenes (glycyrrhizin), K+ and Ca+ salts, and aglycone (flavanoids). Used to relieve GI irritation and ulceration
Liquorace risks
Mineralocorticoid alters body’s mineral balance, excess can result in hypertension and hyperkaelmia. Not to be used in pegnant people or people with renal damage
Ginger Source
Rhizome (underground stem), zingiber officinale
Ginger components and mode of action
terpenes and phenols. Anti-emetic, spasmolytic, heaptoprotective
Aloe Outline
Pericyclic tubules around vascular bundles. Anthraquinone, laxative
Aloe Vera Outline
Mucilage gel in leaf. Acemannan. Has emoillent properties, cytoprotective agent
Prebiotics Outline
Polysaccharides consumed by helpful natural flora. Promotes growth already present in gut
Probiotics Outline
Microbes that are considered helpful in normal flora. Taken to immediately introduce more bacteria to gut

Substance containing both pre abd probiotics
Probiotics Advice
Probiotics/prebiotics should be taken at same time as antibiotics course. Should be taken with food. Take for duration of antibiotics course + a week
