Calorimetry Flashcards
what is the equation for calorimetry?
Q=MCAT
How do you calculate the enthalpy change of combustion?
- work out heat gain/lost - Q=MCT
- work out the moles
3 q/n to calculate thr standard enthalpy change of combustion
why do you use a calorimeter for combustion?
to find the enthalpy of combustion of the flammable liquid
how do you work out the enthalpy change of combustion using the calorimeter?
as the fuel burns, it heats the water, you have to calculate the heat absorbed by the water (the mass and SHC is known) and temp change
ideally, what happens in calorimeter?
all heat is given out by the burning fuel would be absorbed by the water=accurate enthalpy of combustion =but you always lose heat to surroundings
when you burn a fuel, what happens in terms of the combustion reactions?
some of the combustion reactions may be incomplete.
what are flammable liquids like?
they are volatile - lose some to evaporation
