Call for Indirect Fire Flashcards
what are the 3 parts of the fire support system?
Forward observer, fire direction center (FDC), firing unit
what are the 5 rules of calling in indirect fire
- plot your position
- Observer target direction (OT Direction)
- observer target Distance (OT Distance)
- Observer target factor (OT Factor)
- plot the target
____ mils in a circle
1 degree = ____ mils
6400, 17.8
why do we use mils?
able to convert angular deviation (Mils) into lateral distance (meters)
how are mils expressed?
to the nearest 10 mils. If ends in a 5, round to the nearest even tenth
When finding OT distance, what rules do we observe?
only measure in meters,
estimate to the nearest 100m
OT Factor: mil relation formula
W = (R/1000)*M
(W = lateral distance in meters, R = Range, M = angle in mils)
- allows us to translate mils into meters
If OT distance greater than 1000 meters,
express to the nearest whole number (1.2 ~ 1)
OT factor =
OT distance / 1000
If OT distance is less than 1000 meters,
express to the nearest 10th, (0.7 ~0.7)
three transmissions (1-2, 3, 4-6)
- Observer identification
- Warning Order
- target location
- target description
- method of engagement
- method of fire and control
what are the two methods of target location?
Polar, Grid
types of missions
adjust fire, fire for effect, immediate suppression
describe adjust fire
Not certain on target location. One gun fires one round at a time. Allows enemy time to leave target and seek cover
describe fire for effect
Accurate target location and FO is certain first volleys will have an effect on the target. All guns firing simultaneously
