calculations Flashcards
what is a solution
a homogenous mixture of two or more substances can be in the form of any matter
e.g. buffers, reaction mixtures, cell culture media
what is concentration
how much of the solute is present per unit volume
molarity, mass/volume, normality, ppm/ppb
what is percent weight volume
another variation of percentage weight volume is weight/volume. this variation measures the amount of solute in grams but measures the amount of solution in milliliters
what is Molarity
A concentration unit
M=moles of solute/litres of solution
What is Normaility
measure of concentration equal to the gram equivalent weight per litre of solution
Normality = n*Molarity
n=number of H+ in acid and OH- in salt
What is gram equivalent weight
measure of the reactive capacity of a molecule
equivalent weight= molecular mass/number of H+ ions
Gram equivalent= mass of solute/ equivalent weight
How to calculate the normaility of a solution
- find the equivalent weight of the solute based on chem reaction
- calculate no. of gram equivalent of solute
- calculate volume in litre
- calculate normaility
