CALCULATION OF DOSES DEFINITIONS Flashcards
Quantitative amount administered or taken by a patient for the intended medicinal effect
DOSE
The amount taken at one time
Single Dose
Amount taken during the course of therapy
Daily dose/Total dose
The schedule of dosing
e.g QID FOR 10 DAYS
Dosage Regimen
The amount that ordinarily produces the medicinal effect intended in the adult patient
Usual Adult Dose
Similarly defined for the infant or child
Usual Pediatric Dose
Quantitative amouth of the drug that may be prescribed within the guidelines of the usual medical practice
Usual Dosage Range
Amount that produces the desired intensity of effect 50% of the individual tested
Median Effect dose
The amount that produces toxic effect in 50% of the individual tested
Median Toxic Dose
a larger than usual initial dose may be required to achieve desired blood drug level
Loading Dose/Priming Dose
Minimum conc. to produce the drug’s desired effect in a patient
Median Effective Concentration (MEC)
Conc. that produces dose-related toxic effects
Minimum Toxic Concentration (MTC)
Referred to as the Primary Drug Treatment
Monotherapy
Additional to or suportive of a different primary treatment
Adjunctive Therapy
Administered to protect the patient from contracting a specifin disease
e.g (Vaccines)
Prophylactic Dose
Contains Pharmaceutical Ingredients which provide the physical features, stability requirement, and aesthetic characteristics desired for optimal therapeutic effects
e.g Solvents PI vehicles preservatives, stabilizers solubilizers binders fillers disintegrants flavorants colorants
