Calcium Flashcards
Acute Hypocalcemia
Hyperesthesia/pawing at face, tremors progressing to flaccid paralysis, seizures, hyperthermia, bradycardia
Periparturient hypocalcemia = ‘Milk fever’; sudden increase in calcium usage for which patient cannot adapt readily enough
Replace the calcium deficit until the patient can catch up
Acute hypocalcemia parental calcium options
Calcium gluconate or Calcium chloride
Ca2+ chloride is causes - never give SQ/IM
Ca2+ gluconate should be diluted if giving SQ, IV is better
Chronic hypocalcemia
HypoPTH
Hypoparathyroidism results in inability of body to convert vitamin D to its active form, Calcitriol
No PTH means the GI tract can’t absorb Ca2+
Chronic hypocalcemia oral options
Calcium carbonate
Calcium proprionate
