Acute Hypocalcemia

A

Hyperesthesia/pawing at face, tremors progressing to flaccid paralysis, seizures, hyperthermia, bradycardia
Periparturient hypocalcemia = ‘Milk fever’; sudden increase in calcium usage for which patient cannot adapt readily enough
Replace the calcium deficit until the patient can catch up

Acute hypocalcemia parental calcium options

A

Calcium gluconate or Calcium chloride
Ca2+ chloride is causes - never give SQ/IM
Ca2+ gluconate should be diluted if giving SQ, IV is better

A

HypoPTH
Hypoparathyroidism results in inability of body to convert vitamin D to its active form, Calcitriol
No PTH means the GI tract can’t absorb Ca2+
