CAL - Suturing Flashcards
What advantages are associated with an inverting suture pattern?
Relatively high bursting strength
Can better withstand leak of fluids / content from hollow organs
What advantages are associated with an everting suture pattern?
Relatively high wound tensile strength
Can better withstand forces trying to pull the wound apart (tension)
Why would you use vicryl over monocryl when suturing oral mucosa?
Less ‘spikey’
What is the difference between the Lembert and Connell suture patterns?
The lembert involves sutures placed perpendicular to the wound
The Connell involves sutures placed parallel to the wound
Connel results in smaller reduction in the internal volume of a hollow organ
BOTH INVERTING
What suture pattern is good for the bladder?
Why?
Cushing
Doesn’t enter lumen
Inverting pattern
Minimal lumen reduction
What is the point of soft tubing in horizontal mattress sutures?
To distribute tension
