CAD Flashcards
line, circle, ellipse, arc, and rectangle tools do what?
Draws the shape selected
Copy tool does what?
Copies and positions objects without having to recreate them.
Zoom tool does what?
Enlarges on screen view
Mirror tool does what?
Creates a mirror image of the object
The trim tool does what?
Trims the end off a line/object
Rotate tool does what?
Turns an object to any angle
Scale tool does what?
Changes the size of an object
Import tool does what?
Brings an object into your design from another source
Export tool does what?
Removes the object from my design to another source
Pattern fill tool does what?
Fills the shape selected with a colour, pattern, texture
Array(linear, box, radial) tool does what?
linear - repeats the object in a straight line
Box - Repeats the object in a square shape
Radial - Repeats the object in a circular shape
What does the offset tool do?
Used to create parallel lines, concentric circles and parallel curves
What does the project edge tool do?
Repeats the object on a different plane
What does the extend tool do?
Extends the selected boundaries or edges
What does the fillet tool do?
Curves the edge of an object
What does the chamfer tool do?
Adding a 45’ sloped edge to an object
What does the extrude tool do? (3D)
Pulls a 2d profile into a 3d profile
What does the revolve tool do? (3D)
A profile that is rotated around an axis
What does a subtract tool do? (3D)
The material is removed from an object
What is an assembly?
Multiple components combined to create a model
What does the shell tool do?
Remove material from the inside of a 3D model to a specified wall thickness
What does Align do?
To align the face of a 3D model with another face
What is the centre axis?
To align cylindrical objects, circular edges or faces
What is a component?
A single component part used to create an assembly later on
What is mate?
To join the face of a 3D model to another
What is a CAD library?
A directory of commonly used parts
What is a sketch?
The name given to a CAD drawing feature used to create a profile
What is an assembly?
Multiple parts constrained together
What is a sub-assembly?
A smaller assembly in another assembly
What is a work plane/plane?
A starting point for sketching
What does datum mean?
a point on the model
What is top-down modelling?
Creating parts in the assembly so they are pre - constrained
What is bottom-up modelling?
Creating all components separately then assembling them all together
what are vertices?
The corners or where edges meet on a 3D object
What is a modelling tree/hierarchy?
The list and order in with a CAD model is created
What is a modelling plan?
A plan created before starting to create a 3D CAD model
DXF stands for what?
Drawing exchange format
What is DXF?
A file format is used to transfer data between different CAG systems. This is a 2D drawing file
Name the 2 file types that can be used by any 3D CAD package.
STEP & IGES
Which 3D file type is older & does not have the same information stored on them also they have stopped being developed?
IGES
What are the advantages of CAD?
- Easy to store and retrieve drawings &files
- easy to modify models and drawings
- don’t have to redraw repetitive elements using a CAD library
- drawing speed & quality are improved
- layout of drawings can be standardised
- Drawings can be very large and don’t require paper
- flexibility of only needing a CAD supported device
What are the disadvantages of CAD
- The large cost e.g. hardware, specialist software to run the program
- Additional costs of updating software and maintaining hardware
- time and cost of training staff to use the software
- Potential security issues (hackers)
- Potential IT problems (crashes, viruses etc)
What is the minimum specification for CAD to be able to run?
8GB of RAM & 500GB hard drive
Name some input devices for CAD.
- Digital Camera
- Drawing tablet
- 3D scanner
- Mouse and keyboard
- Hand-held/flatbed/3D Scanners
Name some output devices for CAD.
- Monitor
- Digital projector
- laser/inkjet/wide format printer
- Drum plotter/cutter
- 3D printer
- Laser cutter
What is the function of 2D CAD?
Used to create technical drawings of buildings
What is the function of 3D CAD
Allows a designer to draw buildings or products in 3 dimensions, parts can be animated, simulated and rendered to be an accurate representation of the finished product
What is the function of 3D CAD Illustration?
Allows the designer to apply materials, textures, light sources, shadows and reflections to graphics.
