Cable Types Flashcards
1
Q
Cat3
A
- 10Mbps @ 100meters
- commonly used for phone lines
2
Q
Cat4
A
- 16Mbps @ 100meters
- Not commonly used today
- Was used for token rings
3
Q
Cat5
A
- 100Mbps @ 100Meters
- contains two twisted pairs
- mostly replaced by Cat5e
4
Q
Cat5e
A
- 1Gbps @ 100 meters
- Doubles twisted pairs to four
5
Q
Cat6
A
- 1 Gbps @ 100meters
- 10Gbps @ 55 meters
- Made up of four tightly woven twisted pairs (more twists per linear foot than 5e)
6
Q
Cat6a
A
- 10Gbps over 100 meters
- higer quality cable that is more resistant to interference
- most commonly used in wired networks today
*
7
Q
Cat 7
A
- 10Gbps @ 100 meters
- frequencies @ 600Mhz
- uses a GG45 connector, not RJ45
8
Q
Two types of Fiber cables
A
- single-mode
- multimode
9
Q
Single-Mode Fibe cable
A
- made up of one single glass or plastic fiber
- carries higher bandwidth 50times the distance of a multimode cable
- requires higher cost electroics to create the light
- used in longer distances (hundreds or thousands of kilometers)
- used in higher bandwidth applications
10
Q
Multimode fiber cable
A
- wider in diameter due to light modes being sent across the cable
- multimode fibers are highly effective over medium distances (500 meters or less at higher speeds)
- generally used within a LAN
- less expensive than single mode fiber due to the potential for use with LEDs and other lower-cost options for creating light
11
Q
The two primary fiber connector types used today
A
- Straight Tip (ST)
- Lucent Connector (LC)
12
Q
ST connector
A
- Straight tip
- was the most commonly use connector with multimode fiber until the mid2000s
- was used on campuses, coroporate networks, and military purposes
13
Q
LC
A
- Lucent Connector
- Smaller version of the Standard Connector (SC)
- supports more ports in the same space
- most common type used in corporate data centers today
- usualyl used with a SFP (small form-factor pluggable) tranceiver
14
Q
SFP
A
Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver
