Q
Can mental health providers ever disclose a patient’s HIV status?
A
No, never
However, medical providers may disclose under some circumstances:
- If a healthcare provider is exposed to a patient’s blood and wants to know the HIV status of that patient
- To let a person who is sexually active with or shares needles with the patient that they have been exposed to HIV (but cannot disclose the name of the patient)
- They must always attempt to obtain the patient’s consent prior to disclosing, but they do not need the patient’s consent
