C9. The Periodic Table Flashcards
What number is the Periodic table’s elements classified in?
Proton number (atomic number).
What do we calls rows in the Periodic table?
Periods
What do we calls rows in the Periodic table?
Groups
What is the relationship between Group number, number of outer-shell (valency) electrons?
The number of outer electrons in the table varies with the Group number.
What are the metals in Group I called?
The alkali metals
Name the trends in Group 1 of the Periodic table.
- Melting points and boiling points decrease down the group
- Metals get softer down the group
- General increase in density (except for sodium)
- Increasing reactivity
What makes the alkali metals different from other metals?
- Low melting points
- Soft / easy to cut through
What are the elements in Group VII called?
The halogens
What are some properties of the halogens?
- Poisonous non-metals
- Low melting and boiling points
- Diatomic
Name the trends in Group VII of the Periodic table.
- Melting and boiling points increase down the group
- The colour gets darker down the group
What are ‘halides’?
Salts formed when metals react with halogens.
What are the ‘transition elements’?
A block of about 30 elements in the middle of the Periodic table.
What are the physical properties of the transition elements?
- High melting and boiling points
- High densities
- Harder and stronger than Group I metals
What are the chemical properties of the transition elements?
- Form coloured compounds
- Form complex ions
- Many transition elements and transition element oxides are good catalysts
- Less reactive than metals from other groups
What are the characteristics of noble gases?
- Monatomic - exist as single atoms as they don’t need to gain/share electrons to form compounds
- Usually found in the air
